What is Block by Block?

Block by Block is a solutions-based, relationship-building approach that identifies and assists neighborhoods that want to come back to life.  The program builds on the tremendous work already done by block, providing resources to make each property on the block fully habitable.  The goal is to complete eight blocks by the end of the 2009 calendar year.

The Mission:

The mission of Block by Block is to rebuild, re-energize and revitalize Cedar Rapids neighborhoods one block at a time.

Core Values:

Block by Block is a solutions-based, relationship-building approach that, with honesty, integrity, and compassion, assists neighbors.

Honesty:  Operating in a truthful and open manner.

Integrity:  Adherence to moral and ethical principles.

Compassion:  Feeling empathy for homeowners' misfortune.

Construction Roy Wier  discusses neighborhood issues with homeowners during Block by Block's first-ever All Neighbor Meeting.

Nearly 90 neighbors and Block by Block Staff members attended Block by Block's first-ever All Neigbor meeting at St. James United Methodist Church. Individuals and Families from all of Block by Block's blocks attended the event. Neighbors broke into randomly picked groups to discuss the things they liked most about their blocks and to brainstorm things they'd like to change as they rebuild their neighborhoods. Block Leaders were recognized, and then Marti Gray, Paula Land, and Justin Novinger made a presentation on the Tapestry Time Bank project, which allows members to give and receive services by earning "time dollars" instead of money.
