| Block 1 - 1300 Block of J Street SW |
The 1300 block of J Street SW is the fourth block. This block is an interesting block at the junction of J Street SW and 2nd Street SW. The streets are in the shape of a piece of pie. This block consists of a plethora of rental properties, some homeowners and a few homes that will need to be completely rehabbed by Block by Block. This should be an interesting challenge and a great block to get back on its feet! |
| Block 2 - 1300 Block of 9th Street NW |
The 1300 block of 9th Street NW is block number three. This block is directly west of the original block, 8th Street NW. |
| Block 3 - 500 Block of 4th Street SW |
The 500 block of 4th Street SW, a dead end street just off 6th St SW, is an interesting mix of rental properties, owner occupied homes as well as our first attempt at a commercial residential property. The street may be a dead end, but the neighborhood isn’t!
This area is located just off of 6th Ave SW (across from Taylor Elementary) and it lies just west of I-380.This neighborhood responded slowly to the disaster, but is moving swiftly now, with Block by Block’s help.
Over the next few months, we’ll see 3 properties rehabbed and rented and an owner repair his house and set his roots more firmly in this neighborhood. Unfortunately, it appears two houses are too badly damaged to be repaired, but hopefully we’ll be able to replace those homes with two new homes. Keep an eye out for this block! |
| Block 4 - 1300 Block of 8th Street NW between L and M Ave |
The 1300 block of 8th St. NW, between L and M Avenues, is the first neighborhood chosen for the Block by Block program. The area is located one block west of Ellis Blvd and two blocks north of A&W in the Time Check Neighborhood. At first glance, it appears that every house is fully restored and occupied.
Since neighbors have cared for each other’s lawns and sidewalks, it’s difficult to see the real story. The reality is that while neighbors have put in countless hours of hard work, there are homes that have only been mucked and gutted with no further work. The neighborhood also includes homes that are still in the process of rebuilding and some that are fully re-occupied. Standing at the entrance to the neighborhood is New Life Church, which was mucked just three months ago and remains at a standstill as the congregation determines its future. While the neighborhood should be commended for the care and hard work spent to rebuild, it also represents the unfinished recovery from the Flood of 2008. |
| Block 5 - 1200 Block of 8th Street NW |
The 1200 block of 8th Street NW is the fifth block, increasing our footprint by expanding near Blocks 1 and 3. This block featured three homeowners who had given up on their houses until Block by Block got involved - we’ve brought them back home again. |
| Block 6 - 1200 Block of 9th Street NW |
The 1200 block of 9th Street NW is the sixth block, again increasing our presence in the Northwest quadrant of Cedar Rapids. |
| Block 7 - 300 Block of 6th Avenue SW |
The 300 Block of 6th Avenue SW is the seventh block, increasing our presence in the Southwest quadrant of Cedar Rapids. |
| Block 8 - 600 Block of 4th Street SW |
The 600 Block of 4th Street SW is the eighth block and our goal block for 2009. Neighbors from Blocks 2, 7 and 8 have begun meeting together, providing them with the opportunity to regain pride in their neighborhoods. |
| Block 9 - 500 Block of 7th Avenue SW |
The 500 Block 7th Avenue SW is the ninth block of the program and the first block of 2010. It’s close to our other SW blocks and across the street from Taylor Elementary. With Taylor as the center of the neighborhood, it is an excellent location for expanding off this base going into 2010. |
| Block 10 - 1100 Block of 8th St. NW |
The 1100 Block of 8th Street NW is the tenth block, enlarging the growing Block By Block Neighborhood located near St. James United Methodist Church. This block has done a great job of diving in and organizing itself.
|
| Block 11 - 1400 & 1500 Block of 8th St. NW |
This is the block directly behind St. James United Methodist Church. Although it is big enough to count as two blocks, we’re anxious to tackle this very long block! We’re looking forward to expanding from the solid base that has been created on the NW side. |
Block 12 - 1300 Block of 1st Street SW/ 100 14th Avenue SW
This block is an L-shaped that includes a quiet, brick-paved section of 1st street and small section of 14th Avenuie right around the corner. This expands the work we've done nearby on 2nd and J Streets, and features some nice big shade trees and lovely homes!
Block 13 - 1000 9th Street NW
This continues our progress around St. James United Methodist Church. This is the southernmost block we're working on in the Time Check area, and has a lot of exciting homes to work on.
| Block 14 - 400 Block 6th Avenue SW |
This stretch of 6th avenue is connected 2nd and 8th blocks (The 500 Block and 600 Block of 4th Street SW). There's a lot of homes that need to be completely rehabbed, but there's a great group of homeowners, landlords and residents who are ready to work hard to bring back their block. |
| Block 15 - 100 Block 14th Avenue SW |
This block, which sits between our 4th and 12th blocks, is a small but enthusiastic addition to our rebuilding efforts on the Southwest side of town! |
Block 16 1100 9th Street NW
This block continues to our work on the Northwest side of town and connects block 13 to our other projects in the area.
Block 17 1200 4th Street NW
We are only working on one side of this block because it is across the street from the City's Public Works Complex, but this is a nice long block that's bustling with activity.
Block 18 1100 10th Street NW
This is our second block on 10th street. We're looking forward to continuing our work with neighbors in this area.
Block 19 - 1200 Block of N St. NW
This block expands on our work on the southwest side of town. It's a quiet block, located right beside Block 17. |
Block 20-600 H Avenue NW & 600 G Avenue NW
This block expands our presence on the Northwest side further south, and includes both sides of the Block on H Avenue and the north side of G Avenue. This is our first block to the East of Ellis Boulevard. |
Block 21-800 H Avenue NW
This Block is directly south of our 13th Block (1000 9th Street NW), and also very near Block 20. We are looking forward to expanding our partnership with more blocks in the City's Northwest neighborhood. |
